Tourism Selangor and SMARTSEL signs Memorandum of Understanding (MoU)

On the 7th of December 2021, Tourism Selangor has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with SMARTSEL Sdn Bhd to develop and improve high-speed Internet networks at selected public zones and tourism spots.

The MOU was signed by Tourism Selangor chief executive officer Azrul Shah Mohamad and SmartSel managing director Ahmad Akmal Hamzah at the state secretariat building in Shah Alam today (Dec 7).

Present as witnesses were Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari, state tourism, environment and green technology, Orang Asli affairs committee chairman Hee Loy Sian and state infrastructure and public amenities, agriculture modernisation and agro-based industry committee chairman Izham Hashim.

SMARTSEL is a state-owned infrastructure company tasked with building and managing Selangor’s telecommunications infrastructure.

In addition to improving Selangor’s Internet networks with higher speeds, the implementation plan also supports the development and construction of telecommunications infrastructure and tourism digitalisation platforms.

This collaboration also involves the installation, testing and launch of Internet services in public zones in Selangor, including selected tourist areas.

To support such efforts, Tourism Selangor will be responsible for providing access to designated tourist sites in Selangor for the development and construction of telecommunications infrastructure.

“Some of the locations that we’ve identified for high-speed internet are information centres operated by Tourism Selangor as well as tourism spots such as Kuala Selangor, Sekinchan and Ijok,” said Azrul Shah.

Ahmad Akmal noted that digitalisation efforts have been increasing post Covid-19 pandemic.

“The availability of ‘Wifi Smart Selangor’ for key tourism spots is one of the aspects we are looking into,” he said.

“There is also a possibility to increase the capacity in future to promote cashless transactions,” added Ahmad Akmal, who also said that the implementation plan will start from the first quarter of next year.
